Chapter 20

POPE PAUL VI sat in a bedroom chair with a sheet around he neck, while his personal barber gave him a haircut. He liked to stay sharp.

There was a knock at the door.

“Come in.”

Two of his top Jesuit aides, dressed in black, walked in carrying suitcases packed for the trip to America. They bowed.

“Your Holiness.”

“Yes, what is it? Can’t you see I’m having my hair cut?”

“Please forgive the interruption, but have you any message for the school, for the boys at St. Aloysius?”

“Hmm . . . let me think.” The pope reached out his hand. “Give me an envelope.”

One of the men opened his luggage for an envelope while the Pope watched. A pair of black Jesuit brand tube socks fell out and rolled beneath the gold-leafed legs of a sixteenth-century dresser.

“Hurry up, man!” Retrieving the socks, the Jesuit put them back in the suitcase and handed the pontiff a piece of paper, an envelope, and pen.

The pope wrote a personal message to the school and—on a whim—picked up some hair clippings off his lap and put them in the envelope. The Jesuits looked at one another and nodded in approval at this personal honor the Pope was bestowing upon the school. Not only a hand written letter, but also hair clippings.

The pontiff licked the envelope and sealed it, then put it on his lap to address it in his own hand:

The two Jesuits took the letter and bowed. The Pope gave them his blessing and they were off, striding through the marble hallways of the Vatican with their baggage, and a personal message for the school.
